IB Diploma Programme passing criteria
At Pueblo East High School, students are able to pursue an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. This rigorous course of study will definitely prepare your student for the rigors of college!
However, students may also take one or more IB Diploma Programme Courses where they have the opportunity to gain exposure to a rigorous curriculum. In order to earn high school honors credit and potentially earn college credit, students must take the external exam in May and complete internal exam components, which is the same expectation when students take Advanced Placement Courses in other high schools.
Students must pay for the external exam; however, fundraising, payment plans, and grant opportunities exist. College credit is determined based on exam scores. To see how much credit can be earned at each college, just search “IB / AP Recognition Charts at “(enter the specific university name here).” For information on college credit in Colorado: CDHE College Credit for IB Exams.
This programme begins in the junior year.
What is the Diploma Programme?
The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.
The Curriculum
IB Diploma Programme students study six courses at a higher level or standard level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences, and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5.
Core Requirements
In addition, the programme has three core requirements that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding.
The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. It is not part of any specific course, but is supported by the extended essay coordinator and a supervisor.
TOK plays a special role in the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), by providing an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know. It is one of the components of the DP core and is mandatory for all diploma candidates.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies. It is not formally assessed. However, students reflect on their CAS experiences as part of the DP and provide evidence of achieving the seven learning outcomes for CAS.
